The Power of the Necktie

I recently wore a series of solid yet bold colored neckties.  There is a psychology behind necktie colors but I was thinking of this when I selected these ties.  I was just trying to look presentable for work.  On day one I wore a dark red necktie, with a white shirt and a solid blue suit.  I left for work thinking about how dull this ensemble looked but by 11am I’d gotten three compliments and was asked if I had an interview.  Later in the week I wore a burnt orange necktie with a blue shirt and a grey micro-check suit.  One of my colleagues asked if I was wearing a new suit.  I’d worn the suit dozens of times.

A couple of takeaways - A bold necktie can enhance your presence.  A red or orange necktie in particular, catches the eye and promotes strength and energy.   Also, because the bold necktie is eye-catching, people will focus more on the tie and less on the suit you’re wearing, which can be a good thing especially, as in my case, the suit has been worn many times and is now a little snug around the waist.

Have a little fun with this.  Wear ties of varying intensity and let me know how it works out.  You can post your experiences directly on the blog.

The Champ Is Here!

Happy 70th Birthday to Muhammad Ali!  I've never thought of Ali as a style icon (outside of the ring) but check out his formalwear below from back in the day.  The tuxedo has a notch lapel and Ali adds a signature piece in his choice of neckwear.
 Rumble young man, rumble!

Tyson Beckford hates man bags!

"Grown a$$ men shouldn't be carrying purses or man bags whatever u wanna call it!"

Inspiration can come from anywhere.  So when I read this tweet by Tyson Beckford (Ralph Lauren model from the 90s), I decided it was time to offer some advice on what type of bag to carry for work.  In my travels I see guys carrying everything from a nylon gym bag to a small piece of luggage to work and I suspect they carry the same stuff I do; a cellphone or two, a magazine or newspaper to read, random scraps of paper and on occasion, last night’s leftovers.  I’m an offender too as I carry a black canvas H&M bag that I bought on a whim.  The strap falls off of my shoulder and it doesn’t exactly make an announcement when I walk into a meeting.

The bag you carry should be appropriate for you but here a few guidelines.  First, it should be useful.  Select one that can easily contain your average daily load.  It should have pockets for your smartphone or tablet and big enough for you to put your items in without it looking bulky.  Second, it should be durable.  You aren’t going to switch up your bag daily so purchase the best you can afford.  Remember that your bag should be able to protect that SI Swimsuit edition and occasional memo you bring home to read.  Third, it should be versatile.  Think about your wardrobe first before buying and whether or not you’re just carrying it to and from work or into a meeting.

Frankly, I don’t enjoy carrying a bag.  Traveling light is very freeing.  But when I need to step it up, I carry the below.  It meets all of my criteria and I think Tyson Beckford would deem it acceptable.
Heading to Atlantic City. I wonder there are any good men's stores!

Ringless Around the Collar

Happy New Year readers! 2012 is in full swing now and if you are recovering from overspending during the holidays, you can save a few bucks by washing your own shirts. The Laundress of New York makes a Wash & Stain Bar made out of vegetable soap and borax that will leave your collars and cuffs clean as a whistle. Just dampen the areas with water, rub them with the Wash & Stain Bar and launder. In 20 minutes, you'll have a clean shirt and two more bucks in your pocket. Add a warm iron and a little spray starch and you'll be good to go. You can find The Laundress products at major retailers and on their website.
