Inspiration can come from anywhere. So when I read this tweet by Tyson Beckford (Ralph Lauren model from the 90s), I decided it was time to offer some advice on what type of bag to carry for work. In my travels I see guys carrying everything from a nylon gym bag to a small piece of luggage to work and I suspect they carry the same stuff I do; a cellphone or two, a magazine or newspaper to read, random scraps of paper and on occasion, last night’s leftovers. I’m an offender too as I carry a black canvas H&M bag that I bought on a whim. The strap falls off of my shoulder and it doesn’t exactly make an announcement when I walk into a meeting.
The bag you carry should be appropriate for you but here a few guidelines. First, it should be useful. Select one that can easily contain your average daily load. It should have pockets for your smartphone or tablet and big enough for you to put your items in without it looking bulky. Second, it should be durable. You aren’t going to switch up your bag daily so purchase the best you can afford. Remember that your bag should be able to protect that SI Swimsuit edition and occasional memo you bring home to read. Third, it should be versatile. Think about your wardrobe first before buying and whether or not you’re just carrying it to and from work or into a meeting.
Frankly, I don’t enjoy carrying a bag. Traveling light is very freeing. But when I need to step it up, I carry the below. It meets all of my criteria and I think Tyson Beckford would deem it acceptable.
