I got my first grown up watch in the eighth grade. It was a gold plated Seiko watch like the one
shown here and I won it in a contest. I
took great care of that watch for a long time and only wore it to church and on
special occasions. I’ve owned a lot of
watches since then but I’ve not veered too far from that style over the years.
Wristwatches these days are more of an accessory than a
need these days. Spend the dough and buy
a Breitling if you want to pass a timepiece down to your son or more presently,
impress the ladies at the bar. But for $200
or so, you can acquire a very functional watch that will be precise and appropriate
for almost any occasion.
Here are the basics.
First, buy a thin stainless steel case.
The thin case will easily fit under the cuff of your shirt and the
stainless steel case will stand up to a little wear and tear. Second, buy a watch with a leather
strap. You’ll be tempted to buy a bracelet
watch but a leather strap can be swapped out for a nylon strap for a more
casual look or a leather strap in a different color. Third, make sure it has quartz movement. About 95% of all watches today use quartz
movement because the technology keeps time more accurately than a mechanical
watch.
Any of the known brands such as Citizen or Bulova will
have what you need. If you have business
in different time zones or find yourself underwater a lot, you’ll need to spend
more to find a wristwatch that’s suitable or borrow one from James Bond. For most of us though, a watch with the three
components I noted above will do us just fine.
